The Role: Under the guidance of the Observatory Director, the Telescope Engineer / Solar Observer will be responsible for the day-to-day operations and technical maintenance of the GST. We are seeking a self-motivated, versatile candidate with the technical expertise required to support a sophisticated research environment.
Anticipated Start Date: Early 2026.
Key Responsibilities:
* Conduct daily solar observations and manage telescope and dome operations.
* Support the operation of scientific instrumentation.
* Oversee the maintenance and alignment of telescope optics and scientific instrumentation.
* Assist in mechanical, electronic and optical troubleshooting and repairs to ensure minimal facility downtime.
Prerequisite Qualifications
* Proven experience with the operation and maintenance of large-aperture astronomical telescopes and associated dome systems.
* Familiarity with optics handling, alignment, adaptive optics, cryogenic systems.
* Functional knowledge of electronics, mechanical shop work, and/or optics engineering.
* Ability to work and reside at an elevation of 2,000 meters (6,700 feet); ability to lift heavy equipment and to climb ladders safely in a laboratory/observatory setting.
Preferred Qualifications: A college degree in Physics, Astronomy, Engineering, or a related technical field.
