The SHIELD Summer School invites applications for the 2026 Summer School running in Boston during the week of June 1st, 2026. Participate in lectures from leading research scientists studying the outer heliosphere with an emphasis on the plasma processes and phenomena in play at the edge of the solar system. Work with other participants on activities that explore data and models that exemplify these concepts. Topics covered include: reconnection, turbulence, neutral-plasma interactions, particle acceleration, overview of the structure of the heliosphere. Also learn about the theory and practice of interpreting spacecraft data from missions such as Voyager, New Horizons, Cassini, IBEX and IMAP.
Advanced undergraduates, graduate, and postdoctoral researchers are welcome to apply. Funding will be provided for US domestic travel and housing in Boston. No funding for international travel is available. Priority will be given to applicants from US institutions.
