Selections have been made for this year’s AAS SPD Popular Media Award. Congratulations to the winners! We look forward to seeing what articles and other media are published this calendar year for the next award.
This year’s winners are:
- Kathryn Schulz (journalist) for the article, “What a Major Solar Storm Could Do to Our Planet” in The New Yorker, published 2024-02-26
- Ryan French (scientist) for the corpus of work throughout the year on TikTok, YouTube and other social media, as well as the article, “That giant sunspot that supercharged auroras on Earth? It’s back and may amp up the northern lights with June solar storms” on space.com, published 2024-05-29
- Annelia Anderson (student) for the article, “Johannes Kepler and the Case of the Disappearing Sunspots” on Astrobites, published 2024-08-29
Thanks to everyone who wrote articles and produced media about the sun and its effects on Earth this past year. This year was especially competitive with so many major events occurring that generated a lot of media and interest: a major solar eclipse, major aurora, and Parker Solar Probes closest approach to the sun; on top of the numerous large events during this year of solar maximum.
