The Center for Solar-Terrestrial Research (CSTR) of New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) seeks a Postdoctoral Researcher to join its research team at Big Bear Solar Observatory (BBSO). The CSTR/NJIT operates the 1.6-meter off-axis Goode Solar Telescope (GST) at BBSO which is a world-class facility for high spatial and temporal resolution solar observations in the optical and infrared ranges. The successful candidate will investigate the physics of small-scale solar activity and solar eruptions utilizing data acquired by the cutting-edge GST. A candidate with experience in the analysis of ground and space-based data and/or modeling within the field of solar physics is preferred. The successful candidate will be expected to perform the duties of a postdoctoral fellow, including publication of original research, assisting in the supervision of graduate/undergraduate students, and attending professional conferences. The position is anticipated to start in Summer 2025. The initial appointment is for one year, with a possibility of renewal for up to two additional years contingent upon performance and available funding.

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Astronomy, Physics, Astrophysics, Space Physics, or closely related fields, and be able to work and live at an elevation of 2000 meters. Experience with ground-based telescopes, NASA solar space missions’ coordination, and high-resolution data processing, analysis, and archiving is highly desirable.

The successful candidate will work with Prof. Wenda Cao and other senior researchers at BBSO/CSTR. To apply, please submit the following documents online at https://njit.csod.com/ux/ats/careersite/1/home/requisition/7751?c=njit: (1) a cover letter outlining your research interests, (2) a curriculum vitae, and (3) the names and contact information of two professional references. All inquiries should be addressed to Prof. Wenda Cao, BBSO Director ([email protected]) by May 15, 2025.

The CSTR at NJIT is a world-renowned institution in solar and space physics. CSTR operating the BBSO and the Owens Valley Solar Array (OVSA) in California, is an Instrument PI institute in the NASA Van Allen Probes mission and manages the Polar Engineering Development Center.  CSTR also hosts a NASA MIRO Research Center and an NSF REU Site.  To build a diverse workforce, NJIT, an EEO employer, encourages applications from individuals with disabilities, minorities, veterans, and women.
